Here's a random thought... ordinary life may now be considered lowgrade depression - or lowgrade depression is the new normal.
It must be. Otherwise, why is everything so hyped? I thought of that after returning from the store the other night and noticing all of the wild lighting people do for Christmas. Not that it is a bad thing - it's just really hyped - if not a little over the top. Chasers, strobes, pulsating lights and obnoxious music. Cartoon characters all lit up. Combine that with the fact the malls and stores totally crazed - TV ads with insanely happy people, television shows with screaming audiences going absolutely bezerk over free gift cards and Ellen's underwear... When alone and all is still, no one knows what to do with themselves... what is that silence? Am I lonely? Does something ... make ... me ... feel? Is that sadness, melancholy? Why do I feel ... guilty? What did I ever do? What's happening to me?
Nothing more anti-depressants can't help, huh?

We have a house on the road that puts up decorations up the yim yam. You never actually see the guy doing it - they just seem to appear. He's a rather unfriendly person. We call him "the yuppie."
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, this year his decor really exploded. Thing is, there's no theme or color coordination. It's as though he went out and threw a bunch of crap in the air and wherever it landed is where it stayed. He loves those huge blow up thingys and candy canes.
The only thing he doesn't have is anything even remotely religious.

They're all in search of their Creator, and even though he is standing right there with his arms out, beckoning them, they keep running in the opposite direction looking for a replacement.
ReplyDeleteThe way the world celebrates Christmas is very sad indeed. They look everywhere but the lowly little manger.
If people's lives aren't full of substantial things, they'll fill them up up with insubstantial ones.
