The Last Angelus

Good advice for uncertain times.
In one of his last papal tweets, Benedict wrote Sunday in English: "In these momentous days, I ask you to pray for me and for the church, trusting as always in divine providence." -AP

Some reliable media outlet should do a poll on how many people want the pope to leave and are looking forward to the conclave.  I bet we'd be surprised.

  1. I wish he had stayed, but trust that the Holy Spirit has another in mind for us. It's all part of His plan. Now is Papa's time to step down and pray for the Church. My guess is that he'll do more good for us in prayer while leaving the administration and reformation of the Church to another.

I'll miss him; he was a fine pope. I still miss Pope John Paul II. For that matter, I miss his predecessor, who was Pope John Paul before it was cool. But just as with his predecessors, Benedict XVI now reaches the end of his papacy as God wills, and I do not lament it.

I frankly like the fact that this is a tranquil passing of the baton, rather than a transition wrapped-up in all the heart-wrenching emotions resulting from the death of a beloved father.

So, I do want him to leave...not because I don't like him or because I want to see him go...but because the Church, like time and the world, moves forward. Pope Benedict has turned the page, and now I want to move on, too, to the next chapter.

No matter which pope the Church says goodbye to or how, Jesus Christ remains head of the Church. He is now, and He will remain so in the next pontificate...and in the next...and in the next...and in the next...and in the next.
